JazzaJ

JazzaJ has been bringing together free-improvising musicians in never-before-seen line-ups since 2011. With a strong focus on showcasing Hungary’s emerging improvisation scene, it also regularly features cutting-edge international musicians. Since its founding, JazzaJ has presented more than 600 concerts and workshops, building a strong, open-minded community of audiences and musicians who share an understanding of the creative power of listening and freedom. STYLE ACROSS BORDERS JazzaJ aims to connect and present free jazz, noise, experimental folk, and classical musicians on a shared platform. Selection is based not on style, but on engagement with free improvisation. “Jazz” here signifies an unbridled creative vitality that continually renews its own form, while “noise” represents an openness to a wide spectrum of sounds (in Hungarian, zaj means noise). Over the past 15 years, JazzaJ events have served as a defining stage for numerous Budapest-based projects that later went on to achieve wider recognition. Known within the European improvisational music community, the concert series has featured artists such as Eddie Prévost, Seijiro Murayama, Clayton Thomas, Michel Doneda, and Barre Phillips among others. COMMUNITY The audience is considered a creative partner. JazzaJ believes that through experiencing the dynamic relationship between attention and freedom, more people can be reached by this music, which offers the possibility of the most sincere artistic communication—here and now. The volunteer team, operating as an association since 2016, is dedicated to creating the right framework for the community. WORKSHOPS Education is also a key priority. JazzaJ regularly organizes masterclasses and music workshops that serve as entry points to the art of improvisation and the joy of creating in the present moment. Its events have sparked numerous lasting collaborations. LABEL Since 2025, we have been developing our own label, beginning with our first vinyl release. BUDAPEST JazzaJ’s main sponsors and venues are independent cultural spaces, cafés, and concert halls in Budapest, including e.g. Lumen Café, Gólya, Három Holló or Szerkesztőség (as well as former venues such as Auróra, MüSzi and Mika Tivadar Mulató). The organization also brings curated concepts and ensembles to festivals and special venues. CREATIVE CONTENT Over the years, JazzaJ has produced a wide range of creative outputs, including video works (films, interviews, conceptual pieces), graphic materials (online and offline), written content (descriptions, reviews, analyses, podcasts), and photographic documentation (both documentary and artistic).
