Thursday 21 November 3:30PM – 5:00PM: ASCOLTO | COMMUNITY BUILDING: LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL STRATEGIES (With Manon Moulin, Reset! editorial officer)
Communities are built around shared sets of interests, values and identities. In a music system regulated and controlled by large corporations and unlimited budgets, they remain a fundamental resource to the sustenance and sustainability of alternative and underground scenes. Community radios have this at their core. This workshop explores how initiatives like the Independent Community Radio Network, Cosmos, and Reset! are aiming to build larger communities across the radio sector which are able to cross national borders and link together local realities. What strategies are successful in building stronger communities? Can local communities support the creation of larger movements in the music industry?
Friday 22 November 4:30PM – 5:30PM: ASCOLTO | BUILDING RADICAL ALTERNATIVES: DECOLONIAL PERSPECTIVES IN MUSIC (PRESENTED BY RESET!)
How does independent music scenes from sub-Saharan Africa, West Asia, and Eastern Europe challenge the pervasive dominance of Western norms and the colonial gaze in music? Bringing together voices various background and areas, this discussion unveils how these regions resist mainstream narratives through innovative, non-mainstream expressions. Rooted in independent music it is about sharing insights on how cultural imperialism impacts local music ecosystems, often silencing artistic expressions. Through a decolonial lens, these music scenes and thoughts carve out spaces for radical alternatives that honor cultural heritage and resist homogenising pressures. This panel seeks to reframe global music dialogues, centering stories of resistance and artistic autonomy from the Global South and East.
